Also leads the team in Hits and a close second in Runs. Too many hits are singles but that's a guy you want on base no matter how. If he picks up his slugging, he's in superstar category or damn near it.
Julio’s lack of XBH is a little confusing to me. He is having a good year imo. These past 3 weeks production have certainly improved his overall season stats. What’s most confusing is if you look at his EV’s he’s trailing Mitch Garver Randy and Cal Raleigh. Although its not really surprising that Cal is ahead of him in EV’s it is shocking how many players have a higher Hard Hit % than Julio. He is below the 3 previously mentioned players but surprisingly his HH%’s also trails Polanco, Ben Williamson and Rowdy T. . If you told me Julio had the 7th HardH% on this team I probably wouldn’t believe you. But….I suppose you could file that under “that’s just baseball!”
Luke- first of all I was glad to hear many of the local Sports Media, inc Goldie and Hyphen, “go-to bat for you” in that unprovoked attack on your character by a certain Radio “personality!”
I find myself often defending Julio and if I’m honest I’m getting tired of it. I feel like those Julio critics “have blinders on.” As you say they completely ignore actual metrics that prove his value to the team by suggesting he’s not playing to his potential. They can’t see the fact that he is a bonafide 5 Tool player at one of the most important positions on the field. Nor put any stock into the fact there are very few elite CFers across the sport. One could argue that many Mariners fans are guilty of a defeatist attitude, summed up in the phrase “same old Mariners.” I personally think the Julio bashing can be explained in a very simple way- the fan base is divided by optimists vs pessimists
Thanks Luke for your OCD stat analysis…takes one to know one, but you’re better at it than I am!
What I notice about Julio is a lack of discipline at the plate, especially in high leverage situations like RISP, bases loaded, late in a close game, etc. Just looks like he’s jumping out of his shoes at some pitches, or trying to hit the ball out of the stadium when all that’s needed is a base hit, SF, BB, or similar. I wish he could find that assassin quality that JP seems to have found and that Ichiro had. Your thoughts?
I agree on your overall view that Julio at times tries to do too much in situations w RISP. He is guilty at times of trying to ‘hit a 5 Run HR’ as they say. It certainly was true in the two moments in last night’s Sox game w bases loaded and no outs. To be fair though so did Cal Raleigh and JP Crawford. You may also recall the game a few days ago where Polanco walked off Clase by “not trying to do too much.” Julio really battled vs Clase and imo his battle vs an elite closer w electric stuff in that AB was responsible for D-Mo’s tying Run. However the contrast between Polanco and Julio’s AB v Clase is another perfect picture of the point you are trying to make.

With you 100% on this. I don't get the bashing at all. I feel like it's a bunch of baseball sad people wanting to stay sad about baseball.
